Introduction to Yorkshire & Humber
Yorkshire, or 'God's own county', is one of the most scenic, diverse and interesting of the English counties. World famous countryside, bustling cosmopolitan cities, and an important history bring thousands of visitors to our region each year.
The largest county in the United Kingdom, Yorkshire is divided in to four areas – North, South, East and West Yorkshire and has a population of around five million people. Yorkshire is the UK’s biggest food producer with more than 15,000 companies in the region’s food and drink sector – the largest concentration in the UK. The food and drink industry employs over 200,000 people in Yorkshire across its fundamental sectors; agriculture, manufacturing, wholesale and retailing.
Yorkshire & Humber leads Europe in industry-focused innovation. We’re an ‘ideas region’, spending more on Research & Development in food and drink than anywhere else in the UK. The region has a world-leading centre of excellence in food and drink technology, one of the largest concentrations of universities in Europe and globally-acclaimed research networks.
