Food and Drink trends for 2010

“Predicting the trends for 2010 is certainly trickier than forecasting what would happen in 2009” Chris Brockman, Market Research Manager, Leatherheads. It was no surprise that in 2009 consumers traded down, economised by staying in, rediscovered cooking at home and turned to nostalgia for comfort.

But what about 2010?

The anticipated climb out of the recession may not be that straightforward and what will the consumer do? Will they revert to before crunch habits? Probably not to any great length. What is for sure is that the trends of health, convenience, indulgence and ethical consumerism is set to continue. Sustainability is likely to be come a more pressing issue. Thus more sustainable packaging materials, a greater focus on sustainable sourcing of food and the use of sustainable energy sources.

10 predicted trends for 2010

Sustainability trend sustained. Ethical initiatives and planet consciousness will only heighten as an increasing number of major players fully embrace this topic.

Going veggie for the environment but still craving meat. Although debate rages over the real effect of meat production on the environment , there may be a decrease in the consumption of meat due to dietary changes.

Fibre Focus—with consumers still eating well below the recommended level of fibre it leaves this health issue a sleeping giant ready to awake.

Simplified and local food. Using less and/or store cupboard ingredients will be prominent, as naturally-produced and more locally-produced food is a major consumer requirement.

Small households, big convenience need—household sizes are shrinking due to social changes. Hence convenience remains a key trend. Top of the list being portion size.

Performance naturally – energy drinks and foods will continue to boom but with a shift towards more natural products.

Brain health as well as energy, products that promote sustained development remain of high interest.

Exotic chocolate Consumers have been awakened to different types and flavours in chocolate and will build the trend as it remains an affordable treat.

Ethnic foods—more Mexican and African Growth will continue as these two cultures influence spreads.

‘Time for tea’ culture linked to the growing health drive speciality teas are booming as tea drinking emporiums are taking up the slack from the coffee bar sector.
